"Karuta Card Games"

Karuta are cards, used for games that are usually exciting, often educational and always playful. Winning requires an excellent memory and quick reactions. The main point is to have fun, although there are serious competitions too.

Karuta help players memorize classical poetry, teach the wisdom of proverbs, and tap into Japan's time-honored awareness of the passing seasons. The cards themselves are often stunning works of art, featuring expert calligraphy, delicate painting and exquisite design. The most extravagant cards were decorated with gold leaf and could form part of a bride's dowry. Today, handmade ones are rare, but there are still workshops where the old skills are preserved.
